Paul Merson reveals his ‘BIGGEST worry’ with Ruben Amorim
Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison have expressed their biggest concerns about Ruben Amorim and Man United after the Portuguese manager failed to make a winning start in his first match.
United shared the points with Ipswich last Sunday when the Amorim side drew 1-1 at Portman Road, with goals from Marcus Rashford and Omari Hutchinson.
He then picked up a victory in the Europa League, a Rasmus Hojlund double either side of the break seeing Amorim praised by the Old Trafford faithful after breaking his duck at his new club.
Merson highlighted Amorim's frustrations with his media responsibilities as a concern after the new manager complained that he had more press commitments in a week at United than in four years at Sporting Lisbon.
“My biggest concern from all this was the interview afterwards when he said, 'That's it now, I've never done so many interviews before. Now I have to focus on the team,'” Merson said.
'No, you are the manager of one of the biggest teams in football.
“You do interviews when they ask you to do interviews and when you are asked to do interviews.”
The pundit continued by comparing Amorim's role at Sporting to that of United, implying that English media members will not be as supportive of him as those in Portugal.
“That was the only concern I think he has because when you play in Portuguese football you do an interview here and there and they win a lot,” he added.
“And you know, he has the press in the palm of his hand because he wins every week, so they want a little bit of him.
“Now he has to keep them happy at the same time.”
Morrison lamented United's decision to hire Amorim mid-season after Erik ten Hag was given such a generous transfer budget this summer.
United spent £180 million on five new players during the Dutchman's last transfer window, only to relieve him of his role at the end of October.
'To remind, [Amorim has] Come in, he hasn't signed his players yet,” Morrison said.
'And what strikes me about Man United is that they could have made this agreement in the summer and that they had Ten Hag buy his players in the summer.
“Now Ruben Amorim has to come in and work with those players.”
The former Crystal Palace striker argued that the Red Devils should have made the brave decision to sack Ten Hag at the end of last season, despite his FA Cup triumph over Pep Guardiola and Man City.
“If they had taken Ruben Amorim this summer, he could have bought his own players and they would have had a lot to work with,” he continued.
'So that's why I look at Man United and say, 'Why didn't you make that decision sooner?'
