It was, they were unanimously agreed, the best of the party. Anfield has been blessed over the years to see a number of extraordinary events, nights that are discussed almost six decades later, but it jumped into the charts.
April 27, 2025 will fall if the day that Anfield organized the party that had been in the making for 35 years. These events do not always go to plan if you have waited for them for so long, but how it has delivered it for those who are lucky to be invited.
They had come up close and far at the moment. For some, this day was a pilgrimage. Before the kick -off, Phil Thompson, that proud European Cup winning captain, was used to by one man while he had a break in his duties for the internal television channel of Liverpool.
Thompson, such a Gregarious soul whose peel represented for the team that he represented 477 times, was happy to oblige, but only when he stood the conversation with the man in the Sir Kenny Dalglish did it clear how big this was for some.
Patrick Freeland had organized himself to come from Florida long ago. At the time, he could not have foresaw that his first trip to Anfield would be the afternoon of a coronation, but fate considered it this way for him and, after landing on Friday, how he thanked his blessing.
It turned out that Thompson had sent him a video message four years ago, when Patrick had fought against cancer for 12 months. He showed him the video and the couple exchanged a hug before the game started.
“It took me enough to be here,” said Patrick. “But four years ago I prayed to God that he would take me to Anfield one day, but I never thought he would take me to this occasion.
'My wife wanted to give me a boost when I was cancer -free for a year, so she arranged Phil's message.
“I can't believe I got the chance to thank him. What a day. '
He was not the only one who said such words. Upstairs in block 109, the shelf of the head, the locals were overcome.
This was perhaps the 20th title of the club, but for many it felt like it was the first and the way in which the stadium was on fire in the last moments was remarkable.
“This is just incredible,” said Carl Atherton, a lifelong seasonal card holder. 'I have never experienced anything like this in my life.
'It was all set up for us – perfect weather, at home, against a team that we were expected to beat. But to do it that way?
'I was lucky to see many things in my time that Liverpool supports. I have been watching the team for 52 years, I have been here if we have won titles before, but this experience is like nothing I can remember. This is exactly there with something. '
It was not said for effect. You knew it would be a remarkable afternoon when you could smell sulfur from red torches on a mile off the ground and circulated a photo on social media, four miles away in Crosby, of plumes of red smoke, wavy over the stadium at 1830.
Old players, such as Vladimir Smicer – who played his role 20 years ago in the Istanbul comeback – and Patrick Berger were besieged when they walked the stairs while everyone enjoyed the event.
There was even a banner who proclaimed '20' in the end of Tottenham while the stadium emptied.
However, the day was best summarized by a group of boys who walked through nearby Newsham Park at 8.30 pm, away from the Hullabalo.
“Do you know what?” They said. “I already miss the scenes with the last whistle.”
