Arteta insists Arsenal can ‘do something special’ in PSG return leg

Mikel Arteta said that Arsenal should do something special to reach the Champions League final after their semi-final in the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Arteta watched while Ousmane Dembele hit the decisive blow in the fourth minute in the Emirates Stadium to give the Ligue 1 a slim 1-0 advantage.

But Arsenal had their chances. Mikel Merino had a second half header excluded for offside and visiting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made various brilliant rescues.

Arsenal could indeed not score in a home Champions League match for the first time since a 2-0 defeat against Barcelona in the last 16 in February 2016.

Only against Newcastle United in January in the EFL Cup (six) do the Gunners have more great opportunities without scoring (six) this season than their three against PSG.

And Arteta believes that the representation of his team to the side of Luis Enrique can give them positives prior to their journey to the Parc des Princes next Wednesday.

“We are during the break. Half time and my message will be exactly the same as it was against Real Madrid after we won 3-0 at home,” Arteta told reporters.

“We have to go to Paris and win. We are more than able to do it. I saw two very good teams, but the margins are small. They had efficiency for the goal.

“The keeper also made a difference to see the result we saw tonight.

“You want to be in the Champions League final, you have to do something special, and we have to do something special in Paris.”

After the first stage, Arsenal gets a 27% chance to reach the final to PSGs 73%, according to the Supercomputer of OPTA.

Arsenal played in their first semifinal since he lost to Manchester United about two legs in 2009 and offered to reach their first final in the competition since 2006.

The Champions League offers the Gunners their only chance to lift a trophy this season after Liverpool sealed the Premier League title last Sunday.

Arteta has come under increasing pressure to achieve large awards in North Londs, after he had not won silverware since their FA Cup success in 2020.

Asked if the draw was still 50-50, Arteta said: “I don't know the percentage, but we have many opportunities to be in the final.

“You have to do something special in the competition and the time to do this is in Paris.”
