Leicester City 2-0 Southampton: Vardy nears 200-goal landmark in rare home win

Jamie Vardy and Jordan Ayew scored when Leicester City put an end to their nine-game run at home in the Premier League, and defeated the colleague relegated side Southampton 2-0.

Leicester had also gone nine home competitions without a goal-the longest run in the English top history-with-fans in the King Power Stadium have nothing to celebrate since a 2-2 draw with Brighton on December 8.

But Vardy ended their drought in the 17th minute with his 199th goal for the Foxes, which he will leave at the end of the campaign.

Bilal El Khannouss played a giving and went with Luke Thomas before he crossed Vardy, who emphatically ended in the roof of the net.

The match was then stopped for more than 10 minutes when referee David Webb – who supervised his first Premier League match – was injured in a bizarre collision with Ayew and replaced by Sam Barrott, with Vardy stopping the match by blowing the whistle of the affected civil servants.

But during the battle of 12 minutes of the time, Ayew was involved in a more positive way, drilling in the top left corner on the rebound after his free kick hit the wall.

The nearest Southampton came to a reaction when Mateus Fernandes had a finish from close to being offside, making this defeat that they will end the bottom and only the second club became this three times in the Premier League, after Sunderland, became after Sunderland.

Leicester goes to 21 points of 35 games, although they are still second bottom, one point behind the city of Ipswich after their 2-2 draw with Everton.

Jamie Vardy will be the first Premier League player to blow the referee's whistle … probably.

Data Debrief: Vardy is approaching Mijlpaal, Leicester drought ends

The goal of Vardy was his 199th in all competitions for Leicester, where the largest player of the Foxes ever determined to reach his double century before he leaves at the end of 2024-25.

His opener-a emphatic left-wing finish that Aaron Ramsdale defeated at his nearby post-wash an important for Leicester because they avoided an unwanted place in the plates books.

The Foxes could only have the second team in the English competition history (top four levels) to go 10 consecutive home games without a goal, after Wolves in 1984-85.

While the men of Ruud van Nistelrooy were to replicate that streak, Southampton are still connected to the Derby County class of 2007-08 for the worst points in a Premier League season. And with Manchester City, Everton and Arsenal the last three opponents of the saints, that task seems difficult.

Interim manager Simon Rusk, however, can claim to be Southampton's most successful boss this season.

Although he has won any of his five games (two draws, three defeats), he has on average more points per match (0.4) than Russell Martin (0.31) or Ivan Juric (0.29).
