Atletico Madrid receive €5m boost on Samu Aghehowa deal

Atletico Madrid was criticized because they were so open to relocation on Samu Agohoe (formerly Samu Omorodion) last summer, with Chelsea in the context for his signature. That quickly disappeared when it became clear that the step was to finance a deal for Julian Alvarez, but the Aghehowa continues to be profitable for them.

Los Colchoneros signed Aghehowa after just 80 minutes of senior football against them in the opening match of the 2023-24 season and activated his € 6 million clause from Granada. He would then spend a successful season on loan at Alaves last year, but they tripled all their money to the Spanish international.

Initially, Porto paid € 16 million for 50% of Aghowa's rights, but retained an option to increase their interest in the player to 80% in exchange for more payments. Marca says that Porto has now pressed the button on the first of those options and has spent another € 5 million to add another 15% of his rights, which means that their share is brought to 65% and the total reimbursement of up to € 21 million.

The dragons still have until the summer of 2026 to pay another € 5 million for the remaining 15% that are available for them. Los Rojiblancos retains regardless of a sales costs of 20%.

The 21-year-old wasted no time to settle in life in Porto, with a goal per match for the opening month or two of his stint at the club. Last weekend his brace against Moreirense brought him up to 3000 minutes in 40 performances. Aghehowa has three assists and 24 goals in those trips and was covered in November by Luis de la Fuente.

There is still an atmosphere of regret for some in Madrid about his departure. While the deal was logical, Aghehowa could be nine in the next decade of Spain in the next decade if he touches his ceiling. Atletico has spent more than € 30 million to bring in Alexander Sorloth, which is currently much more guarantee, but is a shorter signing at 29 and does not have the potential of Aghowa.
