Former MU star sacked by Championship team to end his 8-year stay at the club

A former Star of Manchester United has been fired from the task of his first manager.

Tom Cleverley, 35, who made 79 performances between 2011 and 2014 for United and won the Premier League in the past season of Sir Alex Ferguson, joined Watford in 2017 and spent the last six years of his career at the club.

He then recorded a coaching role from the Academy before he replaced Valerien Ismael as a manager last March.

In his only full season that was in charge, he led the Hornets to a 14th placed finish in the championship, and that has not been enough for him to keep his job.

If you announce their decision on Tuesday and a club statement read: 'Watford FC confirms the departure of Tom Cleverley as head coach.

'Cleverley stabilized versions at the end of the 2023/24 season in an interim position before his full-time appointment last summer.

'At a certain stage, the Golden Boys were part of the play-off photo, but unfortunately versions and results descended with only five wins in 2025.

'Sports director Gian Luca Nani said: “We thank Tom for his service – not only in his role as head coach, but for everything he has given Watford as a player and employee.

'But time has come for a change and to build on what we believe is that a young and talented team that will have benefited from the experience of the championship this season.

'It has been a privilege to work closely with Tom; To understand how he sees the game and his enthusiasm for everything here. He deserves to be recognized for this and I am sure he will have a bright future.

“Tom will always be part of Watford as recognition for everything he has achieved for so many years.”

Watford has had 20 different managers since 2012 and is now looking for another to replace Cleverley.

Cleverley, who also won 13 England caps, took the lead in 52 Watford competitions, won 19, lost 24 and pulled nine.

Watford did not succeed in winning one of their last five games, with a 1-1 draw on the last day against Sheffield on Wednesday with a point of four straight defeats.
