La Remontada not enough as Barcelona exit Champions League to Inter

Barcelona was beaten out of the Champions League in the semi-final stage after a dramatic 4-3 defeat ensured that Inter takes their place in the showpiece event, with the Nerazzurri that won 7-6.

It was a tough opening of 20 minutes before the side of Hansi Flick, who had trouble getting into the game. And it would get worse if Lautaro Martinez scored the first goal of the meeting after an error from Dani Olmo.

Barcelona then grew in the competition and they came close to scoring via Lamine Yamal. But they were then made to pay for that miss, while Inter doubled their lead just before half -time, with Hakan Calhanoglu scored from the penalty spot. There was anger under the Catalan side with the decision to grant the Spot-Kick after VAR had checked the challenge of Pau Cubarsi on Lautaro, but their complaints were meaningless.

Barcelona was on the break, but they were not out. And they came back in the opening 15 minutes of the second period. Eric Garcia Volleyde home after a Gerard Martin Cross, and the latter gave an even better delivery to set up Dani Olmo to go home the equalizer in the hour.

Barcelona dominated the second half and their reward was a third goal in 88 minutes. Raphinha hit the ball to the goal from the area, but even though he was initially refused, he found the back of the net with the rebound.

But it wasn't enough for Barcelona in normal time when Inter found their way to an equalizer. With just a few minutes to go, Denzel Dumfries crossed for colleague defender Francesco Acerbi to put at home in the nearby pole, causing cheering scenes to appear in the San Siro.

That goal meant that extra time was needed to determine the winner of this semi -final draw. And it was Inter who got it 97 minutes thanks to Davide Frattesi, who curled himself in the far corner – without a chance Wojciech Szczesny left behind.

That was enough for Inter, who will now play Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on 31 May. Barcelona sees their high hope rise in smoke, and they must now focus their attention on La Liga – with their next game against Real Madrid this weekend.
