TA: Erik ten Hag is on Leverkusen shortlist to replace Xabi Alonso

Erik ten Hag is on the shortlist of Bayer Leverkusen to become their next head coach, but the former Manchester United manager is also open to a return to the Premier League.

Leverkusen continues the process of appointing a successor to Xabi Alonso, who announced last week that he would leave at the end of the season, and Ten Hag, who has no management since he was fired by United in October, is one of the candidates.

Leverkusen has to make a decision about their preferred candidate, although Como is expecting that their head coach Cesc Fabregas-Die was admired by Leverkusen-in the Serie A-Club for 2025-26.

Former Ajax -head coach Ten Hag previously worked in Germany between 2013 and 2015 as Bayern Munich II manager – when Pep Guardiola was in charge of the first Bayern team – and benefits a move to the Bundesliga or a return to England.

Ten Hag, 55, was fired with United 14th in the Premier League after winning only four of the 14 games of his party in all competitions in 2024-25. Ruben Amorim was appointed as his replacement.

At the end of the previous season, ten HAG was retained as a United Manager after an end -of -year review, and the club activated a contract extension for a year in the summer.

In his first season that was in charge, he led United to third place Premier League finish and success in the Carabao Cup, ending the six-year-old trophy-dried of the club.

United struggled in the interior and in Europe during his second season, left the Champions League in the group phases and finished eighth in the Premier League, the lowest league of the club since 1990. They did, however, defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup finale to end the season with silverware

Ten Hag previously succeeded in Ajax for four and a half years before taking the United Job in 2022. He led the Dutch club to the semi-final of the Champions League 2018-19-the first time that they have reached that phase of the competition since 1997, who beat Real Madrid and Juventus on the way and won three Eredivisie titles.

Alonso won Leverkusen's first Bundesliga title ever in 2023-24 in an unbeaten domestic campaign, because Leverkusen also insured the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League final to Atalanta.

Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga, 11 points behind Champions Bayern Munich with one more competition day.

The former Central Midfender of Real Madrid, who won during his enchantment in the Spanish capital La Liga and the Champions League, was identified as the first choice of the club to replace Carlo Ancelotti, which is Brazil head coach, in the Dugout in the Dugout this summer.

The athletics has reported that conversations between people who represent Alonso and Madrid have taken place this season with the possibility that the former Spain International will take over the lead at the Bernabeu this summer.
