Mallorca win showed what Madrid have been missing, says Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti believes that Real Madrid would have a realistic opportunity to win Liga if they had produced more versions related to Wednesday's representation against Mallorca.

Madrid fell on a neat Martin Valjent -finish after just 11 minutes in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, knowing that anything but a victory would see Barcelona champion without kicking a ball.

But Kylian Mbappe equalized halfway through the second half before the young defender Jacobo Ramon – who had never scored a senior goal – home in the 95th minute.

The Madrid comeback delayed the coronation of Barca for at least 24 hours, as a victory in Espanyol on Thursday – or a victory in one of their three remaining competitions – would secure the title for the men of Hansi Flick.

Madrid was without 12 players for Wednesday's game, with Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger, Lucas Vazquez and Eder Militao under their much absence.

They also played for the first time since it was confirmed that Ancelotti will leave to take the Brazilian track at the end of the season, but the Italian was happy with the focus they showed.

When he was sorry that Madrid did not replicate Wednesday's performance more often, Ancelotti told Movistar: “Yes, we have treated so many victims with extraordinary effort.

“If we had done this in more competitions, the season would have been better. We did not give up even though we had injured 12 players, that is something very rare.

“The problem was solved today with a great attitude of the whole team. I have never seen a team shoot 40 times on goal as we did today.”

The winner of Ramon came from Madrid's 39th and last shot in the Hun match in the Bernabeu in the Bernabeu in Laliga since Opta Records started in 2003-04.

In addition, Los Blancos took an eye-watery 26 corners in Wednesday's game, a record of each team in the competition since OPTA began to collect corner data in 2005-06.

Ancelotti's distinctive second spell with Madrid ends on a sour note, where Los Blancos won no big trophy in 2024-25.

He has been criticized in the Spanish media for a so -called lax approach to training in recent weeks, after he recently praised: “If you want a coach with a whip, sign another coach.”

But he claims that Madrid's shortcomings are not related to his approaching departure and says: “It has been nothing special, it was simple, without problems.

“It has been a good period of coaching, the players have had the necessary respect for me, there have been no problems in that sense.

“The problems have not been. The whip, all that nonsense … We just had problems with our balance.”
