Liverpool met Florian Wirtz for conversations earlier this week, but the Bayer Leverkusen star is not the only new face in Anfield when he becomes a member of the summer transfer window
Incoming Liverpool -goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili seems to be enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Florian Wirtz next season. Mamardashvili, 24, agreed to sign last summer for the Reds in a transfer deal with a value of £ 25 million, but remained on loan in Valencia for the 2024-25 campaign.
The Georgia International is now preparing for his move to Merseyside and it could be followed by Wirtz. The German playmaker is sought by various European heavyweights, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Liverpool threw their hat in the ring with this week by holding conversations with Wirtz and his parents in Blackpool. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder then traveled to Manchester to talk to City.
Bayern has long been considered the leaders, but they are not willing to pay the reported asking price of Leverkusen. That has opened the door for Liverpool and talks about him who joins the pace with the newly crowned Premier League champions.
After it turned out that Liverpool managers had contacted the Wirtz camp, it was passed on by Voetbalnieuws page 433 on Instagram. Mamaardashvili was one of the 1.2 million users who liked their message.
It suggests that the soon former former Valencia star would be delighted if the side of Arne Slot would win the race for Wirtz. The 22-year-old, however, still has to decide his future, with Leverkusen in the process of appointing a new manager after Xabi Alonso agreed to become a member of Real Madrid this summer.
Wirtz has enjoyed another productive season, scored 16 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 performances. During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Germany, he revealed that he would be open to play abroad.
“I am very lucky that I have so many excellent clubs at my door and can now play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe,” said Wirtz. “I have great respect for the boys here in Leverkusen, who, for example, come from South America or Africa, and leave their families and surroundings for their career.
Does Liverpool have to pay £ 126 million to sign Florian Wirtz? Say in the commentary part.
“It is absolutely tempting for me to leave my comfort zone and experience something new at some point. I know the changing rooms of football well enough and am convinced that I would soon find my place everywhere.”
Wirtz was able to play his last game for Leverkusen on Saturday, while taking it in sixth place. Alonso's men, who won the Bundesliga last season, have already confirmed second place.
