Glasner wants cool heads from Palace to avoid Brazil-like defeat in FA Cup final

Oliver Glasner urged his Crystal Palace players to not get caught in the emotions of their FA Cup final, or they run the risk of making a similar fate as Brazil at the 2014 World Cup.

Palace competes in their third FA Cup final, who lost to Manchester United in 1990 and 2016, against seven-time winners Manchester City in Wembley Stadium.

The Eagles have defeated Fulham and Aston Villa on their way to Saturday's showpiece, but are confronted with a difficult test on the side of Pep Guardiola.

Palace has been a 2-0 win in the Premier League in October 2021 without winning in their last seven games against City (D3 L4).

But the Glasner team is impressed this season of the FA Cup and admits only once in the competition and scored exactly three goals in each of their last three games.

With history beckoning to Palace, however, Glasner called for cool heads of his team, comparing their luminaire with the semi -final defeat of Brazil against Germany on the 2014 world cup.

Brazil was beaten by Germany 7-1 11 years ago, and the Palace boss believed that taking the emotion from the game will be the key for his players this weekend.

“Yes, this would be a reward for an excellent FA Cup trip, but I don't really think about the trophy,” Glasner told a press conference on Friday.

“I can remember the World Cup in Brazil, and the Brazilian players cried during the national anthem because of all these emotions they wanted to give back to their country, winning the World Cup at home, and they lost 7-1 to Germany in the semi-final.

“We should not feel busy bringing silverware to Crystal Palace, because this never happened in the history of the club. We will give our best. This is our mentality tomorrow.”

City has won their last three FA Cup meetings with Palace with a total score of 18-4. The most recent meeting was in the fourth round in 2016-17, with the citizens won 3-0 in Selhurst Park.

Palace comes in the collision as underdogs, with 16 points and eight places that separate the two sides, but the Glasner team can come into the game with confidence.

Their victory over Tottenham Last Time Out immediately saw them their record Premier League points of 49 with two more games of their League season left.

“Our preparation was more or less the same as for a Premier League match,” Glasner added.

“We focused on what we wanted to do. We have analyzed Man City, but 90% we were talking about us because this is what we can influence.

“The players have done very well in recent weeks, and we have a lot of confidence and look forward to the final.”

Glasner also confirmed that he has a fully suitable team to choose from, with midfielder Adam Wharton available again after missing the victory at Spurs last weekend.
