Two of the children of Jordan Pickford will be mascots in Goodison Park on Sunday, clear evidence that confronted Southampton is not only a normal game for England no. 1 or someone else at Everton.
While Pickford will stick to his normal routine and swings to the same fan in the Gwladys Street End in his warming, he is fired for his 160th and last performance in the stadium, where the club will go to a new house next season.
“We will play for the memory of winning the last home game at Goodison,” he acknowledges. “So there will probably be busy added.”
Yet it is difficult to keep flashbacks at bay. For Pickford, that includes two dramatic escapes from relegation.
“The striking thing is probably the palace game (in 2022),” he says. 'We had to win to stay on because we had Arsenal gone (in their last game). To get the result after going 2-0 by scoring three in the second half was incredible. Del (Alli) came up and changed the game.
“Arsene Wenger said goodison can be difficult for the opposition because of the noise. It certainly played a role that evening. Once we got the first goal, the fans had a lift-off. After 3-2 it was just a blur!
'In comparison with that, I felt pretty cool against Bournemouth the following year. It was as if we did it before, we might as well do it again! We checked the game and Duke (Abdoulaye Doucoure) got the winner. '
Pickford, 31, has been in Everton since 2017 and remained loyal despite mixing with teammates at international level who play in the Champions League and Win Trophies.
Evertonians have a singing that he is 'Dynamite' and in Fulham last weekend he threw himself around despite hurting his shoulder. “It killed me. I thought my golf season was over! “He asks.
The afternoon kick-off against saints will be emotional, with dozens of former Everton players who were invited for the occasion and fans went off the streets to greet the team coach.
After 30 years without silverware, Everton hopes to flourish in their new site of 53,000 capacity at Bramley-Moore Dock.
“It will be sad to leave Goodison, but we are going to one of the best stadiums I have seen,” adds Pickford.
First, however, there is a special day to enjoy, shared with his children. “It will be a good memory. I am sure I will look back on it in 30 years if I am a grandfather! '
