Ajax officially finished the Eredivisie season in second place after their 2-0 win over FC Twente.
With five new names in the starting line -up, Ajax opened with goal and played with a pace that is not often seen in recent matches. A Ajax playing a dynamic playing saw Brian Brobbey and Kenneth Taylor become badly involved in the last third, but found no breakthrough.
The first big chance of the game was for FC Twente when Ricky van Wolfswinkel led the ball with the goal of Remko Pasveer, but the 41-year-old stop pulled a wonderful salvation to keep the game aimless. A short period in which FC Twente had the initiative was soon over and Ajax regained control.
The home team finally cashed in the dominance on the field and took the lead after 28 minutes when Captain Jordan Henderson scored his first Eredivisie goal from the free kick of Youri Regeer.
Ajax apparently got the 2-0 on a dish when the Indonesian international Mees Hilgers, who caused the free kick from which Ajax took the lead, lost the ball deep in his own half. Brian Brobbey explained it to Steven Berghuis, but the winger could not finish 1-on-1 with Przemyslaw Tyton with his weaker right foot.
The Johan Cruyff Arena burst out after the second half had started following Sparta Rotterdam's equalizer against PSV – a goal that Ajax almost handed the Eredivisie title – and their team doubled the leadership by replacement Wout Weghorst, who ran the ball past the nearby post. However, the VAR has canceled the goal for offside.
It was double disappointment for the home fans after the word of PSV's Luuk de Jong scored the 2-1 against Sparta, the Johan Cruyff Arena reached.
FC Twente had several chances in the twenty minutes in Amsterdam when Van Wolfswinkel and Michel Vlap came close to the Equalizer, but it was Ajax who doubled the lead by Wout Weghorst in injury time.
A title was not for Ajax, who wasted a 9-point lead in the last weeks of the season and will end the Eredivisie season in second place.
