EPL talking points: Happy endings at Everton & Leicester, relief for Arsenal

The Battle for Champions League qualification goes to the last day of the Premier League season with five clubs in the race for three remaining places.

Arsenal guaranteed that they will join Liverpool next season in Europe Elite Competition with a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday, but only one point separates Newcastle in third place from the seventh-placed Nottingham Forest.

Emotions were high for Everton and Leicester fans on Sunday for various reasons.

The Toffees waved goodbye to Goodison Park, their house for 133 years with a 2-0 win over Southampton.

The farewell to Leicester was for one of their biggest players ever when Jamie Vardy hit his 200th goal in his 500th performance for the Foxes against Ipswich.

AFP Sports looks at three talk points of the Premier League weekend.

Arsenal's Comfort Prize

Mikel Arteta admitted that the ambitions of Arsenal were larger at the start of the season than second for a third consecutive season.

But after he had not kept pace with Liverpool and had a heartbreaking Champions League Semi-Final Exit to Paris Saint-Germain, the Spaniard had something to be celebrated by guaranteeing a top five finish.

“We had a dream,” said Arteta. “(To) bring the big trophies for you and we couldn't do it for many circumstances.

“We must ensure that having to follow a dream does not become blurry and ensure that we chase the dream with positivity and enthusiasm for the following season.”

The battle for a top five finish could not be tighter

The defeat of Newcastle means that Manchester City can be third if they win their game against Bournemouth on Tuesday.

But fresh from the disappointment of losing the FA Cup final at Crystal Palace, City is now under enormous pressure not to miss the Champions League.

Victories for Chelsea and Aston Villa pushed the men from Pep Guardiola to the sixth on Friday.

However, the superior target difference of City means that four points of their last two games will be sufficient to qualify.

Vardy's departing party

A season to forget for Leicester at least had a happy ending when Vardy dropped the curtain on a remarkable spell at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy led in 2015, sung from the Non-League Club Fleetwood Town in 2012 and led the Foxes beautiful Premier League title Triumph in 2015-16.

He also helped Leicester to win the FA Cup for the first time in 2021.

“As a symbol of the Spirit that defines the most successful era in our history, Jamie rightly bears the title of our greatest of all time,” said Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.

The 38-year-old has not yet revealed where he will go next season while Leicester goes back to the championship.

“I enjoyed this every minute. I look forward to keeping an eye on the club that I love,” said Vardy, who was visibly emotional when he was replaced by a standing ovation in the second half.

Everton's end of an era

The tears also flowed to Goodison, while Everton supporters brought a tribute to the scene of the Glory Days of the Club.

Despite the fact that they did not win a trophy for 30 years, the nine toppers of the Toffees English titles are only surpassed by four other clubs.

The double from Iliman Ndiaye ensured that the party did not spoil against the degraded Southampton.

And Everton -manager David Moyes wanted to use the emotional farewell as a springboard to a better future when the men's team to a new stadium of 52,000 capacity in Liverpool's Docklands will go next season.

“It is a club that needs a few big days, a big future. Let's hope this is the start,” said Moyes.

“If we can take what we had to go to the new stadium today, it will be something.”
