Tottenham -defender Micky van de Ven spoke for the Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday evening.
While Spurs tries to save their gloomy season with a European trophy, Van de Ven talked about how much winning silverware with the North London side would mean for him.
The 24-year-old and his side are one victory away from their first trophy in 17 years and a moment that he says it would prove many doubters incorrectly.
“If you become a member of Spurs, people naturally joke that you will never win a trophy. This group of players and employees want to ensure that we change this for the fans and the club,” he said.
“We have had a very tough season, so we want to end positively – for us and for the fans for how they supported us this season.”
He was also asked about chairman Daniel Levy, each player gave an engraved watch and the importance of coming first, compared to the last time the team received such a gift.
“In 2019 they were second, so it is now up to us to make sure we come first, and then we can see what could happen,” said Van de Ven. “I think I will treat myself with something special to always look at it and to think:” Ah, this is because I have reached a European final in my career. “
The young defender also commented on manager Ange Postecoglou, whose job is at risk unless he can secure the Europa League. He admitted that he wants to win for him, especially in what would be a great story in his second season in the club.
“Of course we want to win for the Gaffer,” he said. “Everyone knows that he has said that he always wins things in his second year (in a club). It is a nice quote for him and it would make it even more beautiful if we could let it happen!
“He has been so positive throughout the season and made sure that nobody ever let his head down, even if we played a terrible game. We never had the feeling that he is giving us up; he always keeps pushing us. That's why we still believe that we will win at the end of a difficult season.”
The Tottenham season rides on the Europa League final on Wednesday while they want to save something from their disastrous campaign. Winning the competition would book a place in next season's Champions League – plus a huge budget increase in front of the summer transfer window.
