How Brighton, Brentford or Bournemouth could play in Europe next season

No fewer than 10 Premier League teams can qualify for Europe next season, with everything to play for in the last week of the campaign.

The lowest possible position that continental football can earn will be eighth, giving Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth hope for travel abroad.

In the craziest scenario, the Premier League would send six teams to the Champions League, three to the Europa League and one in the Europa Conference League.

It is the kind of news that will get fear in the hearts of Minnows abroad, given the regular dominance of English clubs at the continental stage.

And it would demonstrably make the Premier League of next season much more open, given the requirements that would be set at half of the teams in the competition.

Mail Sport explains how the Premier League could end with 10 teams that have been dropped off abroad.

First, a guarantee: we get six English clubs in the Champions League.

The Premier League sends a regular allowance of four, but also has an extra place for fifth place because of the fame of the division in the UEFA coefficiërangers.

That 'European Performance Spot' goes this campaign to the fifth installed Premier League team.

Then we get a sixth because the Europa League winner gets a Champions League place and Manchester United and Tottenham disputed that final on Wednesday.

So far, only Liverpool and Arsenal have been assured of their Champions League places. Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest all compete for the remaining three league places.

Now, some crucial points. Usually the team that ends sixth in the Premier League in the Europa League, while the club that wins the Carabao Cup (Newcastle did) in the pot of the Conference League.

But Chelsea and Newcastle have the potential to influence this scenario and to hand over the seventh placed club at the Europa League place, with the eighth place in the Europa Conference League performance.

Chelsea is in the Europa Conference League final, and if they win, they will guarantee a place in the Europa League for next season.

But if Chelsea does that and finishes seventh in the competition (the typical Europa Conference League place), then the place in the third tournament in Europe is passed on to the eighth placed club.

There is another scenario. Newcastle has already assured itself of a European Conference League place by winning the Carabao Cup earlier this campaign.

If Chelsea finished sixth and the Europa Conference League and Newcastle would win seventh, Newcastle would be given the passed on Europa League place in the Europe competition match and hand over their conference competition to the club that ends eighth.

These are the two scenarios to which Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth cling to. They are all still able to finish eighth and will hope that one of the above scenarios will take place.

Crystal Palace has already guaranteed a place in the Europa League by winning the FA Cup on Saturday – their first piece of silverware.

But the whole of Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth can be denied. If Chelsea loses the final of the Conference League, there is no extra European position to hand out.

Similarly, if Chelsea and Newcastle end up in the top six, they would just take their place in the Champions League of Europa League, and the Premier League would just send his seventh best team to the Conference League.
