PSG chief responds to Mohamed Salah transfer talk
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi paid tribute to the “amazing” Liverpool star.
Mohamed Salah played another key role for Liverpool last weekend, providing a goal and an assist in a comprehensive 2-0 win over title rivals Manchester City. And yet Salah is now less than a month away from being able to sign a pre-contract agreement with another, non-English team.
The Egyptian's current contract with Liverpool expires next summer and his representative and the club appear to be at a stalemate. Salah was able to agree terms elsewhere in January and Paris Saint-Germain was rumored to be interested in securing his services.
However, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has revealed that Salah has no role in the club's transfer plans.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Al-Khelaifi said: “It is not true. He is a fantastic and great player, but to be honest we have never considered him. We know that every club would love to have him, but this rumor about us is simply not true.”
However, the PSG chief admitted that the club would consider strengthening its player squad in the upcoming January transfer window: “If there is an opportunity, we will of course explore it.”
What did Mohamed Salah say about Liverpool's contract situation?
On Monday, The Athletic reported that Salah is willing to accept a one-year extension at Liverpool, a major concession from the 32-year-old. The report adds that Salah is becoming “increasingly irritated” by the club's negotiating tactics and is keen to re-sign.
“We are almost in December and I have not yet received any offers to stay at the club. I'm probably more out than in,” Salah told reporters after scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Southampton.
“You know I have been at the club for years. There is no club like this. But ultimately it's out of my hands. Like I said before, it's December and I haven't received anything about my future yet.”
Liverpool have made an incredible start under new head coach Arne Slot. The Reds sit top of the table in both the Premier League and Champions League, having lost just one match in all competitions this season.
Salah in particular looks rejuvenated under the new boss. He scored thirteen goals and provided eleven assists in twenty appearances, underscoring his continued importance to the team. The Liverpool faithful will be desperate to see him given the contract extension he so clearly wants.
