Manchester United, who is 16th in the Premier League in the last weekend, was defeated by Tottenham in Bilbao – and the loss will stack more pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim
Rio Ferdinand believes that a “disaster of a season” will lead to Manchester United missing the top goals after a defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final, saw their hope for Champions League football disappear.
United, who is 16th in the Premier League in the last weekend, was defeated by Brennan Johnson's first half strike in Bilbao, and the loss will stack more pressure on head coach Ruben Amorim.
Ferdinand said to TNT Sports: “It has been a disaster of a season that ended in a bad tone, but I don't think they have done enough to earn it. I thought both teams looked afraid to lose it.
“You can't expect to win a trophy if you play a little reserved and conservatively, you have to be brave at these moments. It will be a long, long summer.
“The recruitment list they had will now have to be deleted because they will not have Champions League football. It is a very different list to recruit.”
Tottenham ended their 17-year-old waiting for a trophy, in which Baas Ange Postecoglou maintained his promise to “always win something in his second season”.
“It's great for the club, it's a long time ago,” said former Spurs player Gareth Bale. “I am happy for the fans and after all these years the fans have waited, they will celebrate this tonight.
“Now Ange is going down as a legendary manager to win this European cup. You will look back on it and Tottenham will see the Europa League win and will not watch the competition position.”
It is still to be seen whether the future of the Australian is in North Londs, with Spurs currently 17th in the Premier League.
“It is on the board, he has proven that he wins trophies. He promised to win a trophy and he did that,” Bale added to the future of Postecoglou. “If you are a Tottenham fan, I am sure you have a mixed opinion.
“Prior to the game, I know for sure that many people wanted him and now he has won a trophy, I am sure there will be a lot of confusion.”
