Jonathan David has confirmed that he will leave Lille at the end of the season, but the Canadian international still has to announce where he will play his football next term
Canada striker Jonathan David will be a wanted man this summer while he is preparing to leave Lille for a free transfer. Manchester United belongs to the clubs in the mix for the Ligue 1Shot, but his international boss Jesse Marsch does not expect him to go somewhere without a guarantee for the first team football.
David will be one of the leading men for Canada, because they want to come from the group stage of a World Cup for men for the first time. They only took one point in Qatar in 2022, but in the 2026 edition as co-hosts go together with the United States and Mexico.
The 25-year-old striker David is already the top scorer of his country, but comes in this summer with a big decision to make. And it is one with former Leeds -Baas Marsch – who led Canada to third place in the Concacaf Nations League in March – has thrown some light on what the frontman will think prior to his upcoming movement.
“Knowledge of Johnny, he is going to play,” Marsch told reporters, while Canada called a provisional team prior to this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. “He goes to the best club where he can be. And I think that is achieved the most in terms of what it would mean to compete for trophies in Europe.
“But he will also want to play. And I think that is important. I think the most important thing for him is, it's not good if he goes somewhere and then he has to play a lot on the couch and not get minutes to keep himself sharp and fit and ready and ready to go, especially with the World Cup for a year away.”
United belongs to a number of parties that love David, who scored 109 goals on 232 games for Lille. Napoli would also have had conversations with a view to a swoop, while Inter Milan is also connected.
If the attacker joins Inter, Marsch would not expect him to prevent in the Gold Cup. That tournament overlaps with the Club World Cup, where Inter is drawn in a group with river plate, Urawa Red Diamonds and Monterrey.
Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 this season and took care of the next term Europa League football. Before the last game of the season, David confirmed that it would be his last.
“I wanted you to hear from me it is time to say goodbye after five years in the club,” he said on Instagram. “I spent five great years in Lille. I know it wasn't the easiest, but I hope my goals and parties have brought your joy and happiness. It has been a long and fun ride, and especially with the two titles we won together, I think [that] Makes the story even better. “
He also shared a message with his teammates, coaches and club staff, before he again addressed the fans and said: “I know that the start was not the easiest, we had a number of difficult moments, but I think it helped me to bloom with the player I am today with your support and help me.”
