Al-Ahli 1-3 Al-Ettifaq: Wijnaldum leads late fightback

Two late goals saw Al-Attifaq al-Ahli disturbing in their last home game of the Saudi Pro League season and won 3-1 in King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Thursday.

Top scorer Ivan Toney won and converted an early penalty to set Al-Ahli on track for their ninth victory in 10 games in all competitions.

But that lead was canceled four minutes after the break when Mohammed Abdulrahman was on Al-Etifaq.

And with only three minutes left, the visitors turn the game upside down when Toney's former Newcastle United teammate Georginio Wijnaldum was felled by Edouard Mendy.

Wijnnaldum took the Spot kick himself, just like Toney and found, just like Toney, the net, before replacement Madallah Al Olaan packed the points in the 95th minute.

The defeat threatens to end the Al-Ahli season on a damper less than a month after their AFC Champions League Elite Final Triumph over Kawasaki Frontale.

Fifth in the table, but at least assured of ACL Elite qualification as holders, they end their campaign on the mid-table Al-Riyad on Monday.

Data Debrief: well-known shortcomings chase al-ahli

Al-Ahli led most minutes in the Saudi-Pro League this season and quickly hit the front again through Toney's sixth minute penalty.

But protecting those leads has turned out to be a bigger problem, and again the Asian champions could not hold all three points.

Indeed, after giving up an equalizer early in the second half, the two late goals Al-Ahli now have 15 points away from winning positions this season.

Since they are 16 points in the first place, this has been a harmful trend.
