Zavagnin upbeat as Sporting KC face New England after positive small steps

The interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin of Kansas City Sport says that he is still being encouraged by their improvement while they are preparing to organize the New England revolution in MLS.

Sporting sit 13th in the Western Conference on 12 points, after he had made an enormous improvement under the leadership of Zavagnin since he took over from Peter Vermes.

However, they are without winning in their last three games, however, the last two (L1) and struggle to eliminate many openings in their 0-0 pat position with San Diego FC last weekend.

Zavagnin acknowledged that there are still improvements to make, but it was generally happy with how the team has settled under his leadership.

“We must be more dangerous around the goal. And we have proven that we can already be extremely dangerous and effective and efficient this year,” he said.

“But we build like a team. We improve week after week. We take small steps at the same time, but we go in a positive direction.

“That is encouraging, and we have to feel good about it and the momentum that we bring in the game at home [against New England]. “

New England is now 11th in the Eastern Conference and currently have an unbeaten line of six games in MLS (W4 D2).

They pulled their last two into the competition and had disappointment on midweek when they were beaten from the US Open Cup after they had lost 3-1 to the Chicago Fire.

Head coach Caleb Porter was disappointed by that result, but did not want the heads of New England to fall because they want to build on their recent MLS run.

“We are doing reasonably well in the competition,” said Porter, as quoted by the Blazing Musket -Substack.

'We have 14 points of the last 18. So the [San Jose game] was disappointing for us not to take the three [points]But we are now a very good run and we cannot lose sight of that. “

Players to watch

Sporting Kansas City – Shapi Suleymanov

Sporting Kansas City tried only two shots on Saturday in his draw with San Diego FC after making no shots in a victory at the La Galaxy on 4 May.

Shapi Suleymanov was responsible for both efforts. He only generated 0.05 expected goals (XG), but he tested the goalkeeper with one of those shots before hit the woodwork with the other.

New England Revolution – Carles Gil

Carles Gil has scored in each of his last four regular season matches, the longest series by a revolution player since Gustavo Bou in 2021 (four straight).

The last REVS player who scored in five straight regular season matches was Pat Noonan in September 2003-April 2004.

Match -Forecast: Draw

Sporting Kansas City has only lost two of their last 14 home games against New England, dating from October 2008 (W9 D3), but one of those defeats came in the last visit of the Revs to Kansas, a 2-1 win in June 2022.

Sporting KC has avoided the defeat in five of their first eight games in the regular season under Kerry Zavagnin (W3 D2). Sporting has collected more points in their first eight games under Zavagnin (11) than in their last 16 under Peter Vermes (nine).

New England has since been unbeaten in six straight matches in the regular season (W4 D2), their longest run since a seven-match Stretch in May-June 2023. The Revs held clean sheets in five of those six games, including a scoreless draw with San Jose on Saturday.
