Tuchel: No early release for England players at the Club World Cup

Thomas Tuchel will not release players early for the club World Cup, because the head coach of England wants to build a side that is able to win next year's world cup.

On Friday, Tuchel announced his 26-man team for their upcoming world cup qualification against Andorra for a friendly against Senegal on 10 June in the city.

Ivan Toney was the surprise name included under his choices, while there was no room for Phil Foden from Manchester City or a player from the Manchester United team.

The German coach started rule victories against Albania and Latvia, and continues to refine his last team in their bid at Glorie during the World Cup 2026.

But he has a difficult situation to navigate next month, with their friendly against Senegal five days before the club World Cup, with eight of the players he chose.

The monthly tournament is held in the United States and England captain Harry Kane's Bayern Munich play Auckland City on the opening day of the tournament.

Conor Gallagher, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill and Reece James are also involved in the tournament.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could also be another player involved in the club World Cup, if Liverpool allows him to complete his reported transfer to Real Madrid on time.

“The discussion was very open,” said Tuchel. “Very fast, we also understood that this is a very important camp for us with a year to go to the World Cup.

“Why send players if we want to cherish every day that we have together. What signal would it send to the group to send players away?”

Tuchel added that he will start and finish the newest team in England with the same 26 players, and insists that he will manage minutes for those participating in the club World Cup.

“I was a lawyer and I saw the reason for the players going to the club World Cup to perhaps leave a little earlier, to perhaps change the team,” Tuchel added.

“I understand the argument of especially the clubs that would like to see the players rest, but we have a strong argument for ourselves and our goals that we want to achieve.

“We are building a group and being together. We want to develop a comrade, and it is only possible if we take seriously every day.”

The 51-year-old was also present to reveal the reasoning behind his decision to leave Foden from the newest team in England.

Earlier this week, Foden had said that his struggles during the 2024-25 season came down to the Off-Field problem and a buttoning ankle injury that has plagued his campaign.

The midfielder of the city, who was an important part of Pep Guardiola's Premier League-winning team last year, has only managed 15 target involvement in all competitions this season.

Tuchel, however, stated that there is no concern about the recent form of Foden and explained that his exclusion of the team was to help him find the joy in his game again.

“Perhaps we have become so used to his highest level that we are now, as you said, we are worried, but I think there is no reason to worry,” Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“I think it might just be a dip in his development. Lately he has to find the joy in his game again. It's not that easy, it's not easy in his feet.

“So yes, he is struggling, but he is still so young and still full of talent.

“I had a good phone call with him and everything is fine. I loved him as a person in the camp.

“We don't have to talk about his talent, we will more or less do everything to bring him back. Hopefully the majority is still on him and he will come back.”
