Coach Diego Simeone feels frustrated that Atletico Madrid will end the domestic season without a trophy, but said that the campaign had still been positive for his side.
Atletico, third in Laliga and 12 points behind champions Barcelona, were beaten by Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey by Barca and from the Champions League round round, but still had hope for the club of the club in the United States, Simeone said next month.
“It is still positive,” Simeone said reporters prior to Sunday's trip to Girona. “We again participated very well into the semi -final in the cup, we participated very well in the Champions League, one of the best in which we participated.
“We had ambitions until March in (LaLiga); I felt that this season is closest to the championship.
“We have been left with the frustration that we have not won titles, what the fans like … We are going to the Club World Cup, what a new tournament will be and we hope to respond to the way we want.”
Simeone, who led Atletico to two Laliga and two Europa League titles, said that he was aimed at ending the competition season, with a draw at Girona enough to end a third place.
“We are still thinking about trying to play tomorrow with those who can do the best in the game. We are not focused on giving opportunities for the club World Cup,” he added.
