Amorim makes Manchester United U-turn after offer to leave without compensation

Manchester United has one more match left of their worst Premier League season and boss Ruben Amorim acknowledges how bad it has been and insists that things can only get better

Ruben Amorim insists that he is happy that he took the lead over Manchester United this season – even though he initially wanted to wait until the summer to replace Erik ten Hag.

The United campaign has been an unmistakable disaster. The last role of the Red Devils of the dice in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening fell flat with a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in Bilbao, which did not make any back door access to the Champions League of next season.

Amorim has supervised the fall of the club on the 16th in the Premier League Prior to the last game of Sunday of the season against Aston Villa in Old Trafford and in the aftermath of the loss of traces in San Mames that was offered to walk away without compensation from the club if the United Hierarchy wanted he wanted.

The Portuguese, however, retain the confidence of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Club Chiefs and will supervise a large rebuild in the club this summer. After missing £ 100 million in income from going back to the top competition of European football with their Horrorshow of Basque Country, the new financial reality of the club means that every player is available for transfer if the price is good.

But at his press conference for the game on Saturday, Amorim insists that the mistakes made in 2024-25 are not repeated.

“At the moment I am really happy that we arrived for six months before we started a new season,” said the United Boss. “I think we will avoid many mistakes the following season. This is the time that we can use all that suffering to change things in the summer.

“It's not just the players. There are many things to change. We have suffered a lot, but I am really happy that I arrived six months ago because it will help me the following season. We have this game against Villa and we have to concentrate on that, it is not over. We want to end up in a good way for our supporters.

“After we will judge the team. We know what we want to do. We will deal that when the season is ready.”

And about the fight of the current campaign, Amorim was on it: “I will not try to convince you otherwise, it was a difficult season, but we had that hope that we could win something and that could help us complete the season in a different way.

“The way we can get up is to concentrate on the next game to end in a good way. If you start thinking about the future and the team, a new season starts, and we will start with new ambitions and try to do better.

“I think these six months were really difficult, many changes, not only for me, but for the entire club. We have made so many changes in the club, sometimes it takes about five years or three years to change all the staff and many things. We have changed coaches in the middle of the season and we have changed the way we play.

“It was really a difficult season. Now it is the part we have to enjoy, to concentrate on the future and to be positive. We know what to do, I know how I want to play, that is clear. With all the mistakes you point, I know how I want to play and that is the exciting moment that we can change something.”
