Postecoglou toasts ‘outstanding’ Spurs season despite thumping final-day defeat

Ange Postecoglou labeled Tottenham's season as “excellent”, despite following their Europa League glory with a humble home defeat against Brighton.

Spurs were beaten 4-1 by the side of Fabian Hurzeler on the last day, the loss that short parties cut off after Brennan Johnson had helped them on Wednesday to make European success against Manchester United.

Dominic Solanke's 17th minute Penalty made the hosts of Postecoglou ahead, only for Hinshelwood to score a brilliant double early in the second half.

A Matt O'RiLey-Spot-Kick and a pounding Diego Gomez finish and then completed the victory for Brighton, who missed the qualification of the Conference League after the 1-0 victory of Chelsea in Nottingham Forest.

Postecoglou spent praise on his side despite the disappointment on Sunday, pointing to Spurs who won their first trophy since 2008.

Asked how he would judge the season for the BBC of the Day competition, said the Tottenham -Baas: “Excellent! We won a trophy that we have not done for 17 years, and we are in the Champions League.

“Ask a supporter at the start of the season if they would take that and there would be no person in the house who would not.”

Tottenham lost 26 games in all competitions this season, their most in one campaign in the history of the club, and lets it ask about the future of Postecoglou.

They also became the first side in the history of top flight that lost 22 games in a season of 38 games and were not banned, so that the 2024-25 campaign was terminated in the 17th.

“It doesn't bother me to ask me about my future,” Postecoglou added. “I can't answer. I am pretty relaxed about it. It has been an incredible season. I couldn't be a more proud.”

The 22 Premier League of Spurs beat this campaign corresponded to an unwanted layer, and only lost so many games in the 1934-35 season when they finished the bottom of the top division.

They also sent 65 goals in the competition, which only adds further to speculation that the task of Postecoglou could be in danger for next season.

“You ask the wrong person,” the Australian pushed back after further questions about his future.

“Everyone in the media is intelligent enough to know that I am not the person to ask those questions. I will take a break and hopefully we will be the first day back to start things next season.”
