Ruben Amorim spoke about Manchester United's transfer plans after their last Premier League collision of the season against Aston Villa in Old Trafford and hinted at caution
Ruben Amorim has warned that the summer transfer activities of Manchester United will be limited by financial fair play rules while offering to revise the club's fortune. The Red Devils ended their season with a victory over Aston Villa, but only finished 15th in the Premier League.
It marks the worst Premier League season of United ever and the 13 times champions will not be able to rely on the financial boost associated with the qualification for Europe. Amorim's side missed the qualification for the Champions League after losing Tottenham in the Europa League final.
The entire United team has already been offered for sale, while there seems to be an ambition to land a striker and midfielder when the transfer window is opened. Amorim has somewhat established expectations, but still emphasizes that change is required in the summer months.
The 40-year-old head coach is planning to improve the players that United already has after a disastrous start of his term of office at Old Trafford.
“You know better than I have rules with FFP,” Amorim said after the last game of the season. “We can't change that this year.
“We have to do something in the summer. We have a plan and we have been doing that for a while. We also have a preseason to improve the players we have.”
Amorim also suggested that his team is improving and that there are better times. But crucially warned that the club might have to undergo even more difficulties.
“Difficult week. Tough for everyone,” he said. “But it was well cheerful from the players and supporters today. So we finished a terrible and difficult season with a victory. It is a good feeling.
“We're trying. We had momentum in other games like this. In the [ Europa League ] Final we were clearly the strong team. But sometimes we don't score. We had so many opportunities today. We are improving, but we have a lot more to do next season.
“It's a special club with special people. We already know that. That's why it's so hard to disappoint them if we play badly. It was a difficult season, but this club is more than this and we will try to do better the next season.
“We have to acknowledge that it will take time. We are going to suffer a little more, but there will be better days. We are changing things that you cannot see in the results. You can't see today, but they are there. It's in culture. It's the way we behave and do things every day.”
