This was the bizarre moment that the stars of Manchester United reportedly had to do help from the locals in Malaysia while touring Kuala Lumpur on e-scooters in the aftermath of their weak tour after the season, defeat against ASEAN All-Stars.
The curtain fell on Sunday for a miserable season for the men of Ruben Amorim, with a 2-0 home victory to Aston Villa who did not have the necessary shine in a 16th place Premier League finish.
Last week Man United also missed their last chance of silverware – and their chance of a hoped place in the Champions League next season – in their Europa League final against Tottenham, in which the Red Devils were destroyed 1-0 in Bilbao.
But instead of withdrawing before the summer and regrouping prior to the next campaign, Amorim's players left on Sunday for a lucrative Asian tour after the season.
The gloom of the team, however, only remained abroad, with man United 1-0 lost 1-0 to a team of hand-picked Southeast Asia-internationals and stars of regional competitions in the Maybank Cup in the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Despite the loss, some man United players seemed to get their time abroad, venture into the city and rent e-scooters.
In a video shared with Reddit, Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Ayden Heaven were spotted in the streets of Kuala Lumpur, after they seemed to be helped by the local population with payment for the vehicles.
The rentable scooters were probably only accessible with the help of a local app, good for the confusion about payment, but supporters on social media were not willing to miss the chance to lamp the finances of Man United.
“Jim (Ratcliffe) can't even afford f*ING (sic) scooters for the boys (crying emoji) (Laugh-Cry emoji),” they said.
“More of the cuts of Sir Jim?” Another added.
“These cuts go too far, Sir Jim,” A third added in the same spirit, with another joke: “Even Barcelona was not so brutal, Gahdam (sic).”
Another thought: 'This is just incredibly bizarre. It feels like a parody that I can't describe it. '
One commentator summarized: 'Holy S *** LOL This humiliation tour is getting better and better'.
But many in the reactions were sympathetic for the players, who were probably the victim of a broken app – even if some wanted to ask why the players were allowed to take the somewhat dangerous transport mode.
Amorim's team will now travel to Hong Kong to face the national team of the special administrative region, but the Portuguese manager will probably want to see more spirit of his players before the end of the tour after the season.
“Yes, a disappointing result, but no injuries and a heavy pitch,” Amorim said after the last whistle.
'We don't have it not to suffocate in every exercise, in every game, that's what happened.
'We have to win these types of games, whatever happens. We have to put that into us in every game.
'The most important thing is not injuries with this weather and to arrive here on this day. It is not an excuse, we have to perform better. '
