Jon Anik claimed ‘a superstar is born’ after clash of undefeated knockout artists ended in one round

One of the UFC's voices was convinced that a new star had arrived on this day in 2016.

Jon Anik was accompanied by Brian Stann in the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas for the UFC Fight Night 88 event that was led by a must-see Bantamweight matchup.

At the time, the 135 pound division only recently welcomed Dominick Cruz, who defeated TJ Dillashaw in January to reclaim the gold.

With Cruz who needed new and exciting challengers, after he had closed his trilogy with Urijah Faber in Dominant Fashion, a new competition came through the ranking.

Cody Garbrandt soon became a star for the UFC, but it was his performance in his first main event spotlight, which showed that he could be something special.

Cody Garbrandt slammed Thomas Almeida in a battle of two of the most exciting rising stars of the UFC

With a 100% finishing percentage at 8-0, Cody Garbrandt had already emerged as a candidate to keep an eye on after compiling a three-fighter wintreak in the Octagon.

His first main event came on 29 May 2016, where 'No Love' would enter the cage as the Underdog, with the #7-ranked competition.

Just like Garbrandt, Thomas Almeida was also one to watch at the age of just 24 with 4-0 in the UFC with three consecutive knockout wins, including his classic fight with Brad Pickett on UFC 189.

Although Almeida shot back with its own strong attack, it was the slick boxing skills and devastating right hand of the American who was the story of the fight.

The Alpha Male Jager team exploded a huge right hook to send the Brazilian to the Canvas with 'big' John McCarthy who quickly waves the fight.

When Jon Anik entered the Octagon to give Garbrandt his moment on the microphone, he helped set the tone for the rise of the competition by: “A superstar is born in Las Vegas tonight.”

Cody Garbrandt vs Thomas Almeida turned out to be a crossroads fight at the time

While a man had to lose their unbeaten record in the main event, both Cody Garbrandt and Thomas Almeida were still two very exciting contenders in the Bantamweight Division.

The matchup, however, was a bit of a Crossroads -Matchup in their career with 'No Love' that won the Bantamweight title later that year.

Almeida, on the other hand, would only win a fight in the UFC, after bouncing back with a victory over Albert Morales.

The Brazilian would lose four in a row before he left the promotion after his defeat against Sean O'Malley on UFC 260.
