Wirtz has signalled major transfer ambition – ‘I always wanted to play for them’

Florian Wirtz may be approaching a transfer of big money to Liverpool this summer, but it was another team in mind when he revealed which club he had a child dream to represent

Florian Wirtz admitted that he grew up and wanted to play for Barcelona – while the Bayer Leverkusen -Superster is approaching a summer movement to Liverpool. The 22-year-old is the central figure in one of the largest transfersagas of the summer to date, with the attacking midfielder reportedly switching to the Premier League champions.

After having been to Leverkusen since 2020 after having spent 10 years in the Academy System of Bundesliga -Kant Cologne, Wirtz came forward as a highly appreciated talent in the 2020/21 season and scored eight goals in all competitions.

He only became important as the years progressed when Leverkusen became more prominent in the German title race that Culminated in the club that the Bundesliga won for the first time in their history last season. They were also unbeaten for a good measure.

During his Breakout season in 2021, it was questioned that Wirtz was questioned about his football ambitions. It was then that he was also asked if he cherished career goals.

The young person admitted that it was a child's dream to represent Barcelona. “As a little boy I always wanted to play for Barcelona,” he told Bild. “That is still the case, but I still have some time until that time (laughs).”

Even in 2022, Wirtz insisted that he was open to move abroad in his career and never saw himself as a player who would stay in his home country for the rest of his career.

“It depends on where I see the next steps in my career,” he told Sky Sports Germany when he was asked to leave Germany.

“Playing abroad at some point is definitely a possibility. But I have not thought of that yet. I will just wait and see what will happen and then decide where my next step will take me. Whether it will be in another club or at Leverkusen, I don't know yet.”

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is someone who is particularly well informed about the immense talent that Wirtz owns, since he has coached the attacker with the national team of Germany for two years.

While Flick – who led the Spanish giants to the La Liga title this season – would certainly like to reunite with his former player, Wirtz seems to join Arne Slot in Anfield in what is reported as a club record costs for the Merseyside – outfit.
