Liverpool has confirmed a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.
The Premier League champions have activated the release clause of € 35 million (£ 29.5 million) of the 24-year-old.
The transfer is completed when the window is opened on Sundays, although there is already a total agreement between all parties on all aspects of the deal.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot assesses the right back, which can also play as a winger.
Nederlands International was an important member of the Leverkusen team who won German Double in 2023-24, scored 14 goals and produced 12 assists in 47 games in all competitions, while last season he carried five goals and 12 assists in 48 games in total.
Celtic has a sales clause that can be worth around £ 5 million. Leverkusen signed Frimpong from Celtic in a deal with a value of a maximum of £ 11.5 million in January 2021.
Frimpong moved from the Academy of Manchester City to Celtic in September 2019 for £ 300,000.
Sky Sports News had previously reported that the defender would like to move to Anfield if the club decided to sign a right back to replace the Real Madrid-bound Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer.
However, Frimpong is not signed as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool already has other options right-back and Frimpong can play anywhere on the right side of the team.
Liverpool wants to build on their Premier League success by strengthening their team, increasing competition even more for places and offering head coach Arne Slot more tactical flexibility.
The Reds also prepare for the expected participation of Mohamed Salah on the African Cup of Nations that will take place in Morocco this winter.
Frimpong already knows Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo from his time with the Dutch national team.
Liverpool has been watching Frimpong for 15 years and came close to recruiting him in front of their academy.
Conor Bradley, 21, ended the season as the first choice of Liverpool and drew a new four-year-old deal at the club as they were planning for the future without Alexander-Arnold.
Analysis: How Frimpong Alexander-Arnold can replace in Liverpool
Sky Sports' Peter Smith:
“Trent Alexander -Arnold and Jeremie Frimpong are among the top players in their positions in world football – but they are very different players with very different styles. The Dutchman could transform their attacking game plan.
“While Alexander-Arnold is known for his range, so that his teammates are put in dangerous positions with his balls in the box of Crossfield deliveries, Frimpong is running out of his team with his running and wearing the ball.
“The statistics illustrate the point, with the comparison between the through balls and take-ons that the two players have made remarkable in the past two seasons. Alexander-Arnold has made 16 balls in this period, but only two.
“That difference can also be seen in the heat in the pair of the couple. While Alexander -Arnold often does a lot of his work in deeper areas – and that is a characteristic of Arne Slot's tactics this term, with its full -backs that sometimes stay back – Frimpong seems to receive the ball or in advanced areas.
“Of course Frimpong played as a right wing for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen and was able to weigh from that higher position with a considerable number of goals and assists.
“How would he be needed to adjust his role in Liverpool is an interesting question. Mohamed Salah has spoken about how lock has illuminated him from many defensive tasks. So if Frimpong would encounter those right -wing areas, Salah could drive into a more central role?
“With Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool has to adjust. And Frimpong offers them the opportunity to play in a different way while they want to defend their Premier League crown next season.”
