The man who is in charge of the Champions League final, the Romanian referee István Kovács, has been one of the fastest rising officials in UEFA in recent years. In 2022 he took the lead over the final of the Conference League. In 2024 it was the Europa League. And now, in 2025, he completes a remarkable hat trick with the biggest phase of all.

Kovács – Top official in the Romanian league

Kovács has been an international referee since 2007 and is generally regarded as the senior official in the Romanian League. Since 2019 he has been part of the elite list of UEFA and FIFA. He was present at the World Cup 2022 – although he had no official competitions – but worked on Club Wereldbekers and the Arab Cup. His striking European version came in the semi-final of the Champions League in the Etihad, and supervised the 4-3 victory of Manchester City over Real Madrid.

A physical education teacher, the fitness of Kovács is one of his determining assets. His exceptional conditioning enables him to keep track of the game, to stay in the right positions and earn the respect of players on the field.
