Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi (49) said that he barely recognized his side when they fell to a 5-0 defeat on Saturday due to the Saint-Germain of Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.
PSG conquered their first Champions League title in devastating style and recorded the biggest winning margin in the history of the competition.
The defeat meant a bitter end of a frustrating season for triple European champions Inter, which fell short in three major competitions and ended without silverware.
“It absolutely did not feel like my intersinter – and the players are the first to know,” said Inzaghi, whose side had reached the final with an exciting 7-6 aggregated victory over Barcelona.
For Inzaghi, the loss was particularly painful and two years after his team came in the 2023 final in the 2023 in Istanbul a limited defeat against Manchester City.
“I think PSG deserved to win,” told Inzaghi, whose side for the last crowned European champions under Jose Mourinho in 2010, to reporters in a short press conference.
“There is great disappointment and bitterness because the boys have had a great run this season, and it is hard to end without titles. As a coach I am still proud. We are not satisfied with tonight's game. We have poorly approached it … We did not play the final in the best way, but I thanked the boys.”
PSG dominated the procedure, with teenage wishes Doue produced a sparkling performance, scored twice and setting up the opener of Achraf Hakimi, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and replacement Senny Mayulu who also finds the net.
Inzaghi acknowledged the shortcomings of his party and said that Inter was struggling to match PSG's intensity.
“We were more tired than PSG, who won the French title a few weeks ago while we fought for the Serie A until the last weekend,” said Inzaghi.
“We didn't play technically well, they arrived first … We knew they were stronger than we, we knew we had to be better, but we deserved the defeat completely.”
Inter must now regroup for the club World Cup in the United States in June, but Inzaghi admitted that the pain of losing the Champions League final would not be easily deleted and he would not be attracted whether he would still be at the club at the tournament.
“Heavy defeats and finals leave their mark. We all have to start together again,” he said.
“I will not answer that question (about the World Cup club). I came out of politeness and respect for you, this defeat hurts too much. You come out stronger from the defeats, we went through this earlier and the following year we lost the Scudetto. I spoke to the boys and we have to keep our heads, knowing that we came to win a stronger team that achieved.”
