Chelsea’s new signing Delap makes decision on U21 duty amid Club World Cup clash

Liam Delap will not be mentioned on Friday in Lee Carsley's England team for this month's European Championship under 21 in Slovakia, while the striker goes to the United States with Chelsea for the World Cup club.

The two tournaments collide this summer, although the extensive club competition of the FIFA has priority at the UEFA event where the Young Lions will defend their euro -crown after winning under Carsley in 2023.

Mail Sport understands that Chelsea has spoken with the football club since it became clear that they won the race for Delap's signature.

His £ 30 million from Ipswich was confirmed on Wednesday evening and the 22-year-old is wearing the No 9 shirt under Enzo Maresca.

The first match of Chelsea in the club World Cup is on June 16 when they are confronted with Los Angeles FC in Atlanta.

The final will be held on July 13 in New Jersey.

It is assumed that Delap has the blessing of Carsley to leave Chelsea, with the understanding of the English boss of his unique situation, even though it is a blow to his own squad selection.

Carsley will call the 23 players he brings to Slovakia on Friday.

Delap scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich when they were banned to the championship. Manchester United fought hard to sign him, while there was also interest from Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, Everton and Newcastle, as well as clubs in Italy, Germany and Spain, because his release clause of £ 30 million was considered a bargain.

Chelsea assured him because they had made their interest clear in January and since then conversations have been with Ipswich.

Delap previously played under Maresca in the Academy of Manchester City and that link was the key to him to choose Stamford Bridge differently everywhere.
