Slot hails ‘special player’ Salah and insists he was an ‘example’ to team-mates

Arne Slot praised 'special player' Mohamed Salah on Wednesday evening as an evergreen star who is always there when Liverpool need him.

The Egyptian played an important role with two goals and an assist to earn a point at Newcastle, although it would have been three had Fabian Schar not scored the equalizer in the 90th minute in a rollercoaster match.

And when asked about Salah's contract break, Slot said: “It's difficult for me to predict the future, but the only thing I can expect or predict is that he is in a very good place, in a very good team that provides him with opportunities.

'And what makes him even more special is that in the first hour you thought he wasn't playing his best game and then he comes with an assist, two goals, a shot on the crossbar. His finish is so clinical… special player.

“When I came in I noticed from the start that he led by example, a lot of his teammates weren't there and he could train so hard and we all saw the quality. It's no surprise he's doing well.”

Salah overtook Erling Haaland in the race for the Golden Boot with 13 league goals and Slot added: 'Every time we need him, he is there. We hope and expect that he will continue to do this for a long time.

'It was an excellent performance from him, even apart from his goals. There were many more special things.'

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe was content with a point despite his team leading twice and playing well enough to win.

The Newcastle boss said: 'I have mixed feelings, part of me thinks we should have won, a big part of me is happy we didn't lose.

Overall happy with the performance, good energy and quality against the best team we have faced this season. It was a big leap forward for us.'
