Amorim promises to give Luke Shaw as much time as needed to return full fitness

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has vowed to give Luke Shaw as long as he needs to return to full fitness after his latest injury setback.

The Englishman admitted he is going through his 'toughest period' this week after confirming he has suffered another injury as he has only just returned to fitness. Shaw came off the bench in each of Amorim's first three matches and was in charge after a nine-month absence from the first team.

But Shaw could now face another long-term layoff, which will damage his chances of impressing his new boss. However, Amorim, who suffered his first defeat as Red Devils manager on Wednesday evening, vowed to give the 29-year-old as much time as he needs to recover.

And he praised the left-back for the work he had already put in to ensure he could perform under the Portuguese.

“What I can say since I've been here is that I see him in the medical department working in the gym a lot,” Amorim said. 'We worked a lot on the field and checked the load during the matches. He lost weight during training, so he did everything.

'If he continues to show that behaviour, he is a top player and we need him. However long it takes him, I will be with him, we will help him return. Not just Manchester United, but your national team needs a man like Luke Shaw, so we are here to help him.”

On Tuesday, Shaw took to social media to confirm his latest injury, writing, “Hi guys, it hurts a lot to have to write this as I really thought I had gotten through my recent struggles and was on a positive path for the future, but unfortunately I had a small setback.

'I've been through a lot and had a lot of ups and downs, but this has definitely been my toughest period. I am absolutely devastated and it is extremely difficult to face the reality at the moment.

“I understand that there will be people frustrated, angry and disappointed and I understand all that. There is no one who feels that more than me right now. But what I can promise is that I will do everything I can to bounce back quickly and help this club realize its ambitions this season.

'Thank you to everyone for the support. It really doesn't go unnoticed and I really appreciate it.'

Amorim did not set a timetable for the full-back's return to the first team.

The United boss is hurting from his defeat in the Red Devils dugout. Their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal was the 39-year-old's first defeat of the season, having previously managed a dominant Sporting side before his move to Old Trafford last month. .

The result saw the side lose ground in the hunt for a top four place, leaving them 11th in the standings with 19 points from their first 14 games. United welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford on Saturday before traveling to the Czech Republic to face Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.
