A reunion between Viktor Gyokeres and Ruben Amorim is getting closer after Manchester United got the green light to launch an official approach for the sporty
The hope of Manchester United to sign Viktor Gyokeres has received a big boost after an important obstacle had quietly disappeared. The club was thought as outsiders in the race for the signature of Gyokees, where Arsenal led the peloton for some time.
But it seems that the Swedish target machine is now open to become a member of the Red Devils, despite the fact that they will not play Champions League football next season. There are no formal conversations between United and Sporting CP, but a reunion with Ruben Amorim now looks a real opportunity, especially with Arsenal that focuses on a deal to sign RB Leipzig -striker Benjamin Sesko.
Gyokees was strongly connected to a move to Old Trafford in January, despite the fact that Amorim promised not to raid his old club for talent during the winter window. The Portuguese coach was as good as his word, but did not make such a promise about the summer transfer window.
Gyokeres, who became 27 on Wednesday, is reportedly available for around £ 60 million – a fee that is considerably lower than the £ 85 million release clause in his contract. Given that United £ 72 million spent on Rasmus Hojlund in 2023, that asking price can feel like a bargain.
However, agent costs and the wage requirements of Gyokeres must also be taken into account. The striker has scored an amazing 97 goals in 102 games for sport, and despite the fact that he currently only earns £ 39,000 a week in the Estadio Jose Alvalade, he is expected to seek a salary of more than £ 250,000 a week.
Only five current United players earn weekly wages of £ 250,000 or more. Three of them – Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro – will probably leave this summer, while the remaining two – Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount – will also be linked to outputs.
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe who wants to increase the expenses in the midst of continuous PSR, United can hesitate to meet the hefty requirements of Gyokeres. However, the chance of signing a striker of his caliber – especially with limited competition – can be too tempting to ignore and a gamble that is worth taking.
Top European parties such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City already have a world-class center in place, while the other Premier League rivals of United seem to follow other options.
Chelsea recently defeated United with the signing of Ipswich striker Liam Delap, and although they stay on the market for another attacker, Hugo Ekitike seems to be their primary target. Liverpool is said to also look at the Eintracht Frankfurt star, who may consider him a replacement for Darwin Nunez, who is expected to leave Anfield this summer.
The Red Devils have already spent £ 62.5 million on Matheus Cunha and want to close a similar priced deal for Bryan Mbeumo van Brentford. However, with various deviations that are expected this summer in the forward line of United, there is room – both in the team and on the wage account – for further additions.
Gyokees could prove to be the ultimate signing of the explanation – one that is able to shoot United back the table after a really gloomy season. But like nowadays with so many things at Old Trafford, every movement requires a financial cord. Whether it pays or backfires, the consequences will be considerable and inevitable.
