Valencia-Real Madrid game still in doubt as new date breaks rules

Valencia and Real Madrid's match in November was postponed due to the DANA tragedy that wreaked havoc in the Valencian Community. The game has been rescheduled for January 2, but could still undergo a change.

The match in Mestalla was originally scheduled to take place on November 2, but was postponed at the request of Los Che. La Liga has announced that it will take place on Thursday, January 2 at 8:00 PM CEST, but the date has not yet been finalized.

Diario AS says it was arranged without the green light from the AFE (the players' union in Spain). It was agreed that the players would have December 23 to January 2 off as part of their winter break, but the new date obviously breaches that period. The AFE is still talking to the players to ensure they are open to shortening their holidays by a day, bearing in mind they will have to be back in training at least several days earlier.

The Copa del Rey Round of 32 takes place on the Saturday and Sunday of that weekend, and on the 6th Real Madrid travel to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup, meaning even a day's postponement seems almost impossible.

Given the packed calendar for Real Madrid and the fact that they may be forced to progress to the play-off round of the Champions League, there are few dates left for the match to take place. If the AFE does not agree to the new date, it would likely mean waiting until Los Blancos are out of the Champions League or both are out of the Copa del Rey for the next available date.
