Carragher offers honest Nunez verdict – ‘No one says that about a good player’

Jamie Carragher believes Darwin Nunez will leave Anfield next year.

The Liverpool forward has scored just three goals for the Premier League leaders all season. Considering the total comes from 17 appearances, it's a paltry return for the Uruguayan international, who earned a club record £63m when he joined from Benfica in 2022. Nunez earned a starting spot in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle, but it is only his sixth Premier League start this season.

And the 25-year-old continues to frustrate with his inconsistencies in front of goal, with wayward finishing and a lack of clinical touch when it matters most in dangerous attacking positions. Liverpool legend Carragher admitted: “I never know what will happen to Nunez if he continues.

“We said we don't know what he's going to do, so how will the defenders do that? No one ever says that about a good player, right? It cost £63 million with add-ons and there is no way he got the add-ons.”

Nunez missed one glorious chance, pushing the ball wide against Newcastle, and also couldn't get Cody Gakpo's header across target. His transfer total could rise to as much as £85m, but in discussion on The Overlap Ian Wright insisted: “I don't care – it's still €85m.” [million].

“I would have thought that for that price we would have seen a lot more of him by now. It won't be any different than what he is now.”

Nunez signed a five-year contract until the summer of 2026, but Carragher replied: “I'm not sure he will be here next season. I think Liverpool will let him go.”

However, Liverpool fans continue to support Nunez, mainly because of his work rate and appetite for pressure. Carragher believes he is seen as a 'cult hero' by Reds supporters, prompting Gary Neville to question whether Nunez is better than another Liverpool cult hero, Divock Origi.

He scored just 41 goals in 175 appearances for the Reds, but crucially he scored some crucial goals along the way, especially in the Champions League. Carragher persisted; “He's better than Origi.”

But Wright insisted: “I would like Origi to score more than him.” Neville agreed, “I would too.”
