Van der Sar believes Antony deserves another chance at Man Utd

Former goalkeeper of Manchester United, Edwin van der Sar, believes that Antony still deserves a chance among Ruben Amorim after his loan period with Real Betis.

Antony made a clear start of his Red Devils career and scored in each of his first three Premier League matches for United after his large money movement of Ajax in 2022.

But the Brazilian, who made the switch to Old Trafford in a reported transfer of £ 86 million, did not succeed in building his fast start when he struggled for playing time under Erik ten Hag.

In all competitions, Antony only managed 12 goals and five assists in 96 performances, and was sent on loan to Laliga Side Betis for the second half of last season.

He then shone under Manuel Pellegrini, nine goals and registered five assists in all competitions when Betis reached the Europa Conference League final.

Betis has shown their interest in making the move for Antony permanent, while Bayer Leverkusen, now managed by Ten Hag, are also linked to a move.

But Van der Sar believes that Antony will earn a second shot with the Red Devils next season, while they want to improve their poor campaign 2024-25.

“Fortunately, I am no longer in a position to dictate in a club that should come to players,” said Van der Sar.

“But they are on the right track by signing a more experienced striker, perhaps with another on the road.

“The two players they signed in the winter break were good, so they should be fine if they give the manager confidence.

“Maybe [Alejandro] Garnacho is going, I would say that I will return Antony, but I am not sure if that is realistic. “
