Former Barcelona star could miss out on La Liga return

Former Barcelona star Ilaix Moriba was able to miss a summer movement to La Liga side Celta Vigo from RB Leipzig.

Moriba completed a loan switch to Galicia at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, where the Bundesliga side wanted to move him, after a non-existent spell in Germany.

The Guinea International was announced in its time at the iconic La Masia Academy system of Barcelona as a huge star.

He graduated in the first time next to Ansu Fati and Gavi, but a controversial output in 2021 broke his link with Catalonia.

The 22-year-old was offered a bumper contract in Leipzig and he accepted that he later confirmed that he was sorry during an offer from Barcelona.

His career has since fallen off the radar with four loan tints back in the Spanish top flight, including two campaigns with Valencia, before he came to Getafe and Celta last summer.

Neither Valencia nor Getafe were tempted by permanent offers, despite both purchase clauses on him.

However, the situation is different in Celta, where Claudio Giraldez wants to keep him as part of a pre-agreement with Leipzig.

There are conversations with Celta ready to pay the € 6 million clause to keep him permanently in the Estadio Balaidos this summer.

After making 19 La Liga performances last season, Giraldez pushed the club to make an offer, and Moriba has also reduced his salary requirements to force a resolution.

Reports from Marca indicate that the clause will proceed on June 15 – and if a deal is not mediated by that time – he will return to Germany.

Celta has not yet been able to place a package that has been accepted by Moriba and his representatives, and if they miss the above deadline, Leipzig will increase their asking price, despite the desire to load him from their ranks.
