“I thought he was going to…” – Athletic star opens up on Mbappe penalty miss

Kylian Mbappé has been under heavy pressure in recent weeks, and that became even greater during Real Madrid's defeat at Athletic Club on Wednesday. The French attacker missed a crucial penalty in San Mames that could have made the score 1-1, before Los Blancos was defeated 2-1.

It was Mbappe's second penalty miss in seven days. He was denied by Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher, who denied him last week, and in Bilbao it was Julen Agirrezabala's turn to do so. According to Marca, the latter revealed that he was inspired by Mbappe's failure at Anfield the week before.

“We study everything a lot during these actions. Mbappe is a good finisher and I decided to go to the same spot where he missed the previous one because I thought he would repeat that shot. I saved the penalty and now I feel even more comfortable.”

Mbappe may be taken out of the firing line in terms of penalty duty by Real Madrid, especially since Jude Bellingham scored his last try (vs Getafe). It remains to be seen what the decision on this will be.
