Barcelona wants to sign a new left wing player this summer, and one of their leading goals is Nico Williams. They tried to sign him in 2024, but even though they were split off on that occasion, the Athletic Club -man now prioritizes a move to Catalonia.
Williams will be someone who closely monitors during the second summer transfer window, which will open for business at the beginning of July. Bayern Munich sees him as a top goal, while he has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
But for now it is his preference to stay in Spain with Barcelona. However, it is far from guaranteed that he will seal a move to the La Liga champions before the end of the summer.
Luis Diaz is currently the preferred candidate of Barcelona for the left -wing position, and according to MD, this is because Athletic demands the full release clause from Williams to have a sale take place – within Can Barca, this is seen as a “discomfort”. € 64 million is the total amount that should be paid, and although Bayern and Arsenal are reportedly prepared to pay for this, the Catalans are currently not going to do this.
Diaz would cost in the same region, but Barcelona believes that Liverpool would be open to accepting a more feasible payment plan. As such they continue to work on this deal, but they have Williams in the background as a backup.
There is no doubt that Barcelona should sell this summer to be able to afford a new winger, and this is especially the case for Williams, since Athletic is not open to negotiations. For now it is still to be seen how the situation is going on through the transfer window.
