LIV manager’s comment spoke volumes about Robertson in contract renewal talks

Andy Robertson could be set this summer for an exit in Liverpool in the midst of Bournemouth's Milos Kerkouth, with Atletico Madrid now interested in signing the Scottish left back

Jurgen Klopp's comments about Andy Robertson during his previous contract renewal interviews spoke volumes about the character of the Liverpool star. Robertson seems to be more and more likely to leave Anfield this summer in the midst of interest from La Liga Side Atletico Madrid.

It is said that conversations between Atletico and Robertson's camp have already taken place. The mixed form of the 31-year-old this season had led Liverpool to start looking for a new left back, which decided to work on a deal for Milos Kerkez van Bournemouth, which she is now approaching.

The expectation was that Kostas Tsimikas would be the one who leaves, so Robertson and Kerkez would compete for the left position. But Robertson's departure would make it more likely that TSIMIAS will remain as the second choice next season.

If the Scotland captain has played his last game in a Reds shirt, he will certainly go as a club legend. Since his arrival in 2017, he has won every possible trophy while becoming a favorite of fans.

Robertson's passion and dedication in particular has given him the worship of supporters over the years. And even his former manager, Klopp, summarized his loyalty when he spoke about the contract extension of the Scot in 2019.

Klopp said Club Media at the time (via Liverpool.com): “I am thinking of all the contract innovations I have been involved in, this was done in almost record time. It is fair to say that Robbo did not even hesitate for a second when we talked about extending his stay in our club for more.

“I remember that when we signed him in the summer of 2017, I spoke a lot about 'his story, his journey' and how much I thought of it and thought it was a point of the type of person and player that he would be for us.

“He has exceeded these expectations. He may be originally from Glasgow, but everything about him shouts Liverpool.

“It was fantastic to see him grow, develop and improve him. It was not the easiest start for him to be, because we are blessed with another fantastic left back in Alberto Moreno.

“He had to be patient – he had to be ready when his chance came and his progression has since been an example for every player who adds to us. Everyone is aware of his personality, on and next to the field, but perhaps we are guilty in the context of overseing his quality.

“Ask those who play against him – whether it is matchday of training – and they talk about his technical and tactical qualities, just as good as his character and heart.

“Our supporters have fallen in love with him, he fell in love with them – and both he and his great young family are very at home in Liverpool.”
