Calafiori seeking consistency at Arsenal despite reported Italy return

Riccardo Calafiori remains content at Arsenal and wants to find more consistency next season, despite reports of a return to Italy.

The former Bologna defender is said to be a target of AC Milan, which is said to have asked about the availability of the versatile defender of Arsenal.

Last season, Calafiori only moved to the Emirates Stadium from Bologna, played 29 times and made 16 starts in his debut term with the side of Mikel Arteta.

The 23-year-old could also have seen more, if not for a difficult campaign that is marred by injuries.

And Calafiori insists that his focus continues to succeed on Arsenal and finding regular First-Team football, instead of a reported move back to his home country.

In response to suggestions that he could return to Italy, Calafiori told Gianluca di Marzio: “I am very happy in Arsenal.

“I always feel good in every position I play to help the team. What was missing last season was consistency, and I will look to find that consistency next season.”

Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba indeed stay with Arteta's first choice center-back combination, although the exit of Kieran Tierney Arsenal leaves with less coverage in the left position where Calafiori can improve.

Last season he played 1,496 minutes in all competitions for the Premier League side, which was less than Gabriel, Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior and Myyles Lewis-Skelly.

Only Timber (55) and Saliba (48) won more last season than his 31 tackles for Arsenal, and Calafiori expects to be tough again if Arteta's side hunt chases the Premier League title.

“When I felt good, I always played and made a difference in the team,” he added.

“So the goal next season is to be in shape the entire season.”
