The World Cup openers of the club for legendary clubs Boca Juniors and Benfica saw the teams sign 2-2 in a heated game that produced three red cards, including a given to a player on the couch.
Boca Juniors is one of the most legendary clubs in Argentina, while Benfica is one of the best teams in Portugal every year.
Many players on either side were familiar with each other, including Argentinian legends Angel di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi, both scored against Boca Juniors.
The hysteria started just before half-time, not on the field, but just when former Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain star tried to give his way through the security to talk to the main competition official while he was in the middle of a VAR review.
Herrera was stopped and was shown a red card from main referee Cesar Arturo Ramos when he passed on the events that took place around him.
Herrera was already immersed in the 20th minute with an injury, but looked more like full health to try to talk to the referee.
The teams were even with 10 men again after a red card was shown to Benfica's Andrea Belotti connected to a high boot at the back of the head of a Boca Juniors player.
Ramos originally gave Belotti a yellow card on the play, but was transferred to assess the piece via VAR. After a few moments in the stand, Ramos replaced his first caution with a shipping.
The last red card of the game came out in the 88th minute to Boca's Jorge Figal, who was too late and reckless with a challenge near the touch line, right for a group of Benfica players who heat up.
One of the sideline officers immediately stepped between the Benfica players and Figal group, with Ramos' straight red quickly.
The goals of Di Maria and Otamendi brought Benfica to the level after they had left 2-0 after the 27th minute.
Benfica and Boca Juniors are in group C with Bayern Munich and Auckland City. On Sunday the German giants beat the Upstart New Zealandse side with 10-0.
