Atletico Madrid has identified Lucas Digne of Aston Villa as a potential alternative to Andy Robertson if they do not sign the Liverpool defender, according to a report.
The Spanish side has been in conversation with AC Milan for Theo Hernandez, but, after not reaching agreement, he switched to Robertson, aware that he could give the pecking order when Liverpool Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth signs.
Atletico still has to make a formal approach to Liverpool, but it has been informed that Robertson is interested in talking to them.
According to The Times, Digne, who, like Robertson, has been on his contract for a year, has been identified as a potential alternative if they cannot get a deal for the Scotland captain over the line.
The French are said to have an admirer in head coach Diego Simeone, who value his ability to attack and defend.
The 31-year-old previously played in Laliga and spent two years with Barcelona before moving to Everton in 2018. He was in the West Midlands since January 2022.
Robertson, who saw good friend Trent Alexander-Arnold switch to the rivals of Atletico last week, has to agree a new deal despite conversations.
Asked for his future, Robertson said: 'I am not getting younger – I cannot change my age – but I still believe I have a lot to give.
“We have had good discussions, me and the club, but I am not sure what the future has in store.”
Robertson recently also seemed to show that he wanted to fight for his place in Liverpool during an interview with Sky Sports.
“I think you should always keep moving at every big club, the club always goes ahead and I think you have also been very active in other big clubs such as Manchester City,” he said.
'I know that we have only received Jeremie Frimpong so far through the door, but it seems that one or two others will be close by what we can see on Sky Sports News.
'But now we are at the top, we have clearly won the competition, and it is important that the club continues to improve and find ways to do that.
He continued: 'The club has identified certain positions where they want to get new blood, it seems that players we are linked are all younger players and they are all exciting players.
'So if you play for a big club like Liverpool, you expect challenges, you expect competition and I have always confronted for that, everyone here has confronted that in their own positions and I expect nothing less.
'I want the club to be ambitious, they do that and where we fit in, if we are happy with our role, we will stay and we do it and if not then I know for sure that a few will also come out.
“But you know, that's the nature of football and it's one of the largest clubs in the world and we keep moving.”
