Guardiola ignores his key rule on captaincy to name star in leadership group

Pep Guardiola broke his own management rules to name Erling Haaland as one of the captains of Manchester City for our coming season in an important show of trust in the Superstar striker.

The leadership supply of Haaland had constantly grown during the three years in the Etihad Stadium and, with Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker who left the club, City needed a commotion.

Players and employees usually vote on a five -member leadership group in August, but Guardiola has taken matters into their own hands.

The Catalan remained disappointed about how the Captainincy was managed in the past term, with former ski-skipper Walker left for AC Milan in January.

Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Rodri arrive at Haaland on Wednesday in De Vier, while City starts their defense of the club World Cup against Wydad AC in Philadelphia.

“I am the manager and for the first time in my career I decide the captains,” Guardiola said. 'I didn't like what happened last season and I decide who will represent the team.

“Sometimes I want to be the boss. This season I decided to do it, choose the four captains and after the tournament we might choose one or two more.

“Erling is incredibly respected. He must learn what it means to be a captain, because he will hopefully be there for many years and sooner or later he will take that position to be the first.

'If you have Bernardo, Rodri, Ruben and Gundogan – who were captain when we won the Treble – he will learn.

'The four will guide the new players. There will be problems this season, like every season, but it is more than fine.

'These four players on the field, they are enormous personalities. They say, “We can't accept what's going on” and take the step. '

Guardiola spoke the omission of Jack Grealish from the 27-man team to the United States.

Grealisk will leave the club this summer, with Napoli among those who guard his situation, and Guardiola repeated his comments on the last day of the season when retaining that the 29-year-old regular playing time needs.

“He had a conversation with the club and they decided it was best,” Guardiola said. “Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions.

“We decide that he should play. The club was honest, he was honest. We decide that it is best to stay (behind) and to have a place he can feel as if he can come back to be the player as he was in the year of the Treble or all his career in Aston Villa.

“Without him it would have been more difficult in the year of the Treble. The fact is that he didn't play many minutes in the last two seasons. He has to come back to play and to have the butterflies in his belly that he can play every three days every three days and show the quality he has. '
