Why Jobe is refusing to wear family name as he follows in brother at Dortmund

Jobe Bellingham made his Borussia Dortmund debut from the bank at the Club World Cup on Tuesday evening, where the 19-year-old chooses to wear his first name on his shirt.

Bellingham was followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jude by coming to the Bundesliga Giants this summer.

Jude played for Dortmund between 2020 and 2023, before earning a stunning move of £ 113 million to Real Madrid.

With Jowe who earns comparisons with Jude early in his career, both of which came through the Academy of Birmingham City, the teenager emphasized that he is trying to forge his own path in his career.

After having made his Birmingham debut with Bellingham on the back of his shirt, Jowe chose to drop his last name after he had moved to Sunderland in 2023.

Then Sunderland -Baas Tony Mowbray explained that Jowe had made the decision not to be seen as a life of the name and performance of his brother.

“I think he is trying to create his own identity,” said Mowbray.

“He doesn't want to live from the back of his brother's name, he wants to be the football player he is and show people what he can do.”

Dortmund seemed to make a nod to Jowe's decision when announcing his signature of £ 32 million earlier this month.

The Bundesliga club shared a video to reveal Bellingham with the words 'the name is jowe'.

“I have been here before, watching games, hearing the fans singing, feeling the power of these colors, this place stayed with me,” said Bellingham in the video.

'Now I am here again, to look and not to step into someone's footsteps.

“The same city, the same stadium, but the story that is ours to write now.”

After he arrived at Dortmund earlier this month, Bellingham was admitted to their team for the club World Cup.

The international under the age of 21 debuted as a 59th minute replacement against Brazilian side luminense.

Dortmund was eventually held up to a 0-0 draw in their opening match of the tournament.

The German giants will be confronted with Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD in their remaining group matches at the tournament in the United States.

Bellingham joined after two impressive seasons in Sunderland, which he helped to earn back to the Premier League last month.

Last season he played 43 games in all matches for the Black Cats and was named the young player of the season.
