Ian Machado Garry goads Khamzat Chimaev after 'skinny boy' comments
Speaking to Ariel Helwani earlier this week, Ian Machado Garry revealed his plan to beat Rakhmonov this weekend, capture the welterweight title and then move up to middleweight to take on Khamzat Chimaev.
“My ideal scenario is that I fight, beat Shavkat and win the title. Then I'll move up to middleweight and fight Khamzat. I'll be able to win that belt too. I am not afraid of any man.”
Those comments didn't sit too well with 'Borz', who teased , then you end up without a head.”
As part of the promotional side of UFC 310, Garry sat down with UFC Europe to give his “immediate thoughts” on several top contenders in and around his weight class.
Unsurprisingly, when it came to Khamzat Chimaev, 'The Future' was keen to make it clear that it's up to the dominant wrestler to put his money where his mouth is.
'Khamzat Chimaev [is] someone from whom I also want to take his 0 one day. “You're too skinny boy, don't go near the Wolf's teeth or you'll end up headless” – Okay, when the time comes, be prepared to back up.
Reportedly, Garry and Chimaev almost got into a physical confrontation a few years ago, though neither man was willing to “back it” at the time.
Ian Machado Garry and Khamzat Chimaev once almost had a fight in the elevator
“That fight will happen at some point,” Garry previously stated in an interview with 'MMA On Point', revealing that he almost came to physical blows with Chimaev once when the two were in the same elevator.
“We got into the elevator, and me and my wife are standing there, pressing the button, the doors open, Khamzat and his wife… I'd like to have a fight here. I would have loved to shake Khamzat's hand in the middle of an elevator, the stories would have been damn cool.
“My wife looks at me with eyes coming out of her fucking skull and she says do it, go fight him. In my head I think my teammates are going to fight him tomorrow. I'm not going to screw that up.”
Garry claimed he decided not to try to provoke Chimaev, partly due to the fact that both their partners were standing next to each other – although Ms Machado Garry may have been willing to get involved herself, from the sounds of it.
“There are two damn women here. Me and him are going to die when we argue in an elevator… We get out of the elevator and my wife just looks at me and says, 'You're ap ****'.
UFC 310 airs live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this weekend, Ian Machado Garry vs Shavkat Rakhmonov is the co-main event of the evening and is scheduled for five-minute rounds.
