Enrique confident of Club World Cup progression despite shock Botafogo defeat

Luis Enrique remained convinced that his Paris Saint-Germain team would qualify for the next round of the club World Cup, despite their 1-0 defeat against Botafogo.

The European champions were stunned in the Rose Bowl in California, with the 36th minute of Igor Jesus the difference between the two parties in group B.

Indeed, the victory of Botafogo over PSG is the first victory of a South -American team over a European team in the Club World Cup (including previous formats) since Corinthian's Chelsea defeated in the 2012 final.

But the Luis Enrique team was dominant in the fixture and registered a expected goals (XG) of 0.78 of their 16 shots, although only two of their efforts were on goal, while they also had 74.6% in the game.

In the meantime, Botafogo saw all four of their efforts testing Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG goal, but the Italian could do nothing to prevent Jesus' bent strike not to find the back of the net of the net nine minutes before the break.

PSG thought they had leveled the game in the 79th minute when Bradley Barcola, who was associated this summer with a move to Bayern Munich, found a road past Botafogo goalkeeper John, but his goal was excluded from abroad.

And the Brazilian outfit could hold on to seal a famous victory and became the first team that PSG score stopped in a competitive match in 19 games, when they were defeated 1-0 by Liverpool in the first stage of their Champions League round of 16 Clash.

“Surprised, no. We knew it would be a difficult, very narrow match. Botafogo defended very well,” Luis Enrique said reporters after the game. “Botafogo is the team that defended the best against us this season, in the competition or in the Champions League.

“We had the opportunity to score, but we didn't do that and the competition became more difficult. We know the difficulties of this competition.

“We have to think about the last match (against Seattle on Monday). It is a very short competition, you can get out quickly.

PSG had surpassed their last three opponents by a combined score of 12-0 on their way to the game and won the Coupe de France and the Champions League final en route.

And despite the defeat, Luis Enrique insisted that his team was able to continue to the next round of the competition.

“If there is one team that can turn around a situation, it is ours. And there are not many. We were very good in terms of posture,” Luis Enrique added.

“The result should not erase everything. We have to look at what we have done well and what we can improve. For example, we have admitted more transitions than in many competitions.

“But in these tournaments you have to perform well at the most important moments. We were not.”

The four teams of Brazil at the 32-club tournament have so far been unbeaten and Botafogo boss Renato Paiva said it showed the power of the game in the South American nation.

“I think it's the quality of Brazilian players, the quality of what people do in Brazil, especially the coaches,” he said. “Brazil will always be Brazil in world football.”

In the meantime, Atletico Madrid responded in the other group B match to their 4-0 defeat against PSG with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders, helped by the Brace of Pablo Barrios.

Barrios sensational curled Diego Simeone's silk in a 11 -year lead after breaking the cutback of Giuliano Simeone in the net, who can be cannon the Dwarsbalk on his way to the inside.

Atletico doubled their lead two minutes after the break when Marcos Llorente's amazing ride was tipped on the bar by Stefan Frei, only for the rebound to fall to Robin Le Normand, who squares the ball for Axel Witsel to go home.

Albert Rusnak halved the shortage three minutes later, only for Barrios to restore the Athletico lead in the 55th minute with a well -beaten finish in the right corner.
